About Yoga
Yoga means union, unity or oneness. It is a way of life and a holistic exercise for body, mind and soul.
One of the ancient yoga texts compiled by Patanjali is called the Yoga Sutras and is known throughout the world as one of the most wonderful works of spiritual literature. Many gurus have applied their own interpretation to the Yoga Sutras for many centuries now. Teachers continue to share these interpretations with yoga pupils on their journey of self-discovery. The very essence of this journey is towards settling the mind into silence and then we can realise our true nature.
Yoga is not just about putting your foot behind your head or sitting in lotus position nor is it just a set of flowing movements. Yoga is about being mindful during asana practice, to work respectfully with your own body limitations, moving in a natural flow together with the breath. This is all aimed at allowing the mind to settle, to be present, to be quiet, to be still.
Path of Yoga
One who follows a path of yoga is known as a yogi (male) or yogini (female). Yoga has developed into several branches over many centuries and includes Hatha, Raja (Royal), Karma, Bhakti and Jnana Yoga. Each one has its unique characteristics and represents a particular approach to life and you will find that many branches naturally overlap and complement one another.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga
Patanjali’s teachings of ‘The Eight Limbs of Yoga’ act as a guideline on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life.  They are:-
  1. The Laws of Life (Yama - abstinence)
    - non-violence (ahimsa)
    - truthfulness (satya)
    - non-stealing (asteya)
    - chastity (brahmacharya)
    - non-greed (aparigraha)
  2. The Rules for Living (Niyama - observance)
    - purity (shaucha)
    - contentment (samtosha)
    - purification (tapas)
    - study of spiritual books (svadhyaya)
    - surrender to the Lord (ishvarapranidhanana)
  3. Posture (asana)
  4. Breath Control (pranayama)
  5. Withdrawal of the Senses (pratyahara)
  6. Concentration (dharana)
  7. Meditation (dhyana)
  8. The settled mind (samadhi)
The Benefits of Yoga
The benefits of yoga are huge and include: -

  2. Increased flexibility
  3. Relief of stress and tension
  4. Strengthening of the body
  5. Physical and mental rejuvenation

About Hatha Yoga Classes
For adults Amanda runs Hatha Yoga classes that have the following typical format: -
Preparation
Settling the mind and body and warming up the muscles and joints for asana practice.
Asana
These are the physical positions or postures that provide gentle stretching to enable the lubrication of the muscles, joints and other parts of the body. They are comfortable techniques aimed at building confidence in ourselves, as well as physical health and strength. A series of asanas together is called a Vinyasa where there is a focus on the rhythm of the breath while moving from one posture to another, such as the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara).
Pranayama
Pranayama generally refers to breathing techniques. Prana means ‘vital energy’ or ‘life force’ and yama means ‘control’. With conscious regulation of the breath and as your practice develops you can take the connection between the breath and your energies to a deeper level. Deep breathing aids the cleansing and nourishment of your body. With the combination of asana and pranayama together one can move in a meditative way.
Relaxation
Relaxation is included in each class with different methods to focus on complete physical as well as mental relaxation. Laying on your back being relaxed, but mindful, feeling the positive effects about your practice.
Meditation
Meditation is encouraged in class to balance and still the mind. This could include concentrating on a breathing or visualisation technique, chanting or candle focusing.
Accessible to all Levels of Experience
British Wheel of Yoga teachers are trained to cater for all students and offer modifications of asana and other practices for certain medical conditions, to accommodate individual needs. Everyone is encouraged to practice their yoga in a non-competitive way and without forcing, hurting or damaging ones own body and you don’t need to be flexible to come along to a yoga class!
Class Timings and Recommended Kit
Classes usually last for 90 minutes. You are encouraged to bring your own yoga mat with you as this is becomes your own personal space in your class. It is recommended to wear some workout clothes that allow you to move easily, a t-shirt that is not too baggy, and you will work barefoot.
A timetable of classes will be available soon so please visit again, or contact Amanda for further information.
Private Tuition
Private tuition sessions are suitable for everyone and will be personally designed for you. One-to-one tuition is an excellent way to get started with yoga practice, to work with individual health needs or to develop your own practice further. Private tuition allows for a complete focus on the student.
Following a consultation about your health and your reasons for one-to-one tuition a programme can be designed for you. You may only need a few private lessons to help you on your way and to help refine your practice or you may benefit from a longer programme to aid certain health conditions.
You will receive a personal plan that will enable you to practice a variety of yoga techniques at home on a daily/regular basis.
Private tuition will be available from 2007. One-to-one tuition can be held at Amanda’s studio adjoined to her home, or if you experience travel restrictions, Amanda can travel to you for an additional charge. More information and details will be available soon, so please visit again!
